Five Steps to a Great 2019

By Dr. Mark Denison

A new year is upon us. As we look to 2019, both with our 12 partner ministries and in our individual lives, this is a good time to plan for a great year. There is nothing wrong with New Year’s resolutions, as long as they are rooted in Christ. So what can you do to secure a great 2019? I suggest the following five steps.

1. Go on a fast.

Rick Warren introduced this idea to his church, Saddleback, several years ago. When Jesus was confronted with a seemingly impossible problem – a man in need of miraculous healing – he responded by saying that the only answer was fasting and prayer. Go on a 24-hour fast to bring focus and commitment to the new year.

2. Buy a watch.

Let me explain. Fewer people are wearing watches these days. Why? It’s called a cell phone. Why wear a watch when you have your phone in your hand all day? So buy a watch so you can leave your phone in your pocket. The biggest issue is to reduce your time on your phone, social media, etc.

3. Go on a personal retreat.

It may be for just a day or two. Let Jesus be your example. Before launching his public ministry, Jesus got away for 40 days. Another time, he just went away for the night. A retreat can bring a renewed spiritual connection and clear your mind. It allows for intense planning, prayer, and preparation for your best year ever.

4. Do something new.

Read a new book, take up a new hobby, or try a new exercise. Initiate new family time, a family outing, or a date night with your spouse. Go to a new restaurant, town, or park. Visit another church, maybe for a Saturday night service. Invite your neighbor over for dinner. Mix up your daily quiet time. Do something new.

5. Set goals.

Follow the S.M.A.R.T. goals template. Set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Then set out on a plan to reach these goals. In the process, you will have a blessed 2019!
