Southwestern Seminary's Houston Campus

By Dr. Mark Denison - January 28th, 2019

I remember it like it was yesterday. In January, 1984, I did two things. I planted a church in Friendswood, Texas, where I would stay for 18 years. And I started seminary. I didn't do it the old-fashioned way - load up and move to Ft. Worth. I couldn't afford to leave my church and move my wife from her banking job.

But I didn't have to.

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where I felt called to attend, had the vision to launch an off-campus center in Houston, just 30 minutes from where I lived. The S.E.T. (Southeast Texas) extension was housed by Houston Baptist University, where I had finished my undergraduate work a year and a half earlier.

So I did it. For the next five and a half years I spent every Monday and most of my Tuesday mornings at seminary. They were long days, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. But the work paid off, with the completion of my M.Div. in May, 1989.

If you live in the Houston area and are considering a seminary education, you should check this out. The S.E.T. extension is now known as the Havard School, named after legendary pastor J. Dalton Havard. The campus is now located at Sagemont Church, 11200 S. Sam Houston Parkway E. in Houston. You can call their office at 713-634-0011.

The Havard School provides the same great education offered at the seminary's "main campus" in Ft. Worth. Their most popular degree, the Master's of Divinity, is offered in its entirety at the Houston campus. And along with a great education, you will have hundreds of ministry options in the nation's fourth largest city.

You will also be attending class with dozens of other men and women already engaged in ministry. The learning environment, relationships with professors, and location in Houston will prepare you for a unique seminary experience unlike any you will find anywhere else in the world.
